MPP 2023 Annual Conference Wrap-Up

On Friday, 22nd September, the MIT Portugal Program hosted a remarkable event that left an indelible mark on the world of research and innovation. The Altice Forum Braga set the stage for the much-anticipated 2023 MIT Portugal Annual Conference under the motto “Research that impacts society” which focused on the results of the seven flagship projects.

This gathering brought together 150 participants, and 34 speakers from diverse backgrounds sharing insights and making connections. The event also showcased cutting-edge research from Portuguese and MIT Students and researchers with over 60 Conference Posters and recognized the best 5 posters.

One of the key moments of the 2023 MPP Annual Conference was the Poster Session with MPP Ph.D. students, and Portuguese and Massachusetts Institute of Technology Students who are part of an existing MPP research project, showcasing their research to the attendees.

The winners of the 2023 MPP Student Poster Competition were:

  • Climate Science & Climate Change: Tiago Ribeiro – “From Fire to Data: Capturing Wildfire Dynamics with Semantic Segmentation & Spatiotemporal Reconstruction.”
  • Earth Systems: Ocean to Near Space: João Rocha – “Low-cost and Low-power System for Wave Profile and Tide Monitoring.”
  • Digital Transformation in Manufacturing: Rita Pereira – “Advancing on a Novel Pacifier Design Methodology to Improve Oral Health: A Comprehensive Computational Model of Pacifier Sucking.”
  • Sustainable Cities: Livia Cosentino – “Development of an ecological thermal insulation product for a regenerative design.”
  • Data Science: José Ferraz Caetano – “Data Driven, Explainable Machine Learning Models for Accurate Thermodynamic Predictions.”
