Education, Research and Innovation: Tomorrow’s Pillars
About
September 20, 2022
Aveiro Congress Center
Every year, MPP organizes its Annual Conference, a major meeting that brings together experts from Portugal and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and other actors of the MIT Portugal Community to discuss recent advances in the scientific focus areas of MPP and impact on our society.
This year, the MIT Portugal Annual Conference has returned to an in-person format. It will be held on September 20, at Aveiro Congress Center, under the motto “Education, Research, and Innovation: tomorrow’s pillars”, which seeks to discuss the importance of science and technology and its pillars, namely research, education, innovation for building the future.
For the first time, MPP will reward the work of Portuguese and MIT students via the MIT Portugal Program Poster Award. Students with MPP-FCT Scholarships or part of MPP projects, are invited to submit a poster showcasing their work in one of the strategic research areas of the MIT Portugal Program.
We look forward to seeing you in person at our Annual Conference!

Venue
The 2022 MIT Portugal Annual Conference will take place at Aveiro Congress Center.
About Aveiro Congress Center
The Congress Center is part of an emblematic building of Aveiro’s industrial architecture. Fábrica Jerónimo Pereira de Campos is the former name of this building, which was a former ceramic factory.
Since its opening in 1995, this space has hosted major events: national and international congresses, work and incentive meetings, debates, exhibitions, concerts, and plays.
The Aveiro Congress Center is located within walking distance of the city center with a shopping mall and several hotels and restaurants in the close vicinity. It can be easily reached from the train and bus station.

About Aveiro
Located in central Portugal, Aveiro is set amongst a series of saltwater lagoons connecting it to the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Aveiro is famed for its canals, salt pans, Art Nouveau and baroque architecture and colorfully painted moliceiro boats.
Known as the “Portuguese Venice”, the city is quietly dominated by the Ria de Aveiro, described by Saramago as “a living body that connects the land to the sea like a huge heart.”
The city is crossed by a network of canals through which “Moliceiros” meander. These slim, colourful vessels used to be used to collect algae and seaweed, and today are for sightseeing trips. Visiting on foot does not mean too much effort either since the city is flat.
The city buildings in Art Nouveau style, many of them situated along the main canal of “Ria de Aveiro” are ex libris. Emblematic of the city is the sweet made with eggs and sugar – the “ovos moles” (soft eggs) that are sold in wooden barrels or wrapped in a crusty wafer in different shapes.
